Because of the passing of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act, Fairfax County government agencies must make various government records available to the general public. However, there is no uniform method by which these records must be made available. That means some records may be available online, while others will only be accessible in person or through a mailed request.
Some exceptions allow government agencies to withhold certain records, but rest assured that this resource explains the ins and outs of searching for all public information in Fairfax County through easy, streamlined methods and provides links to the agencies that host them.

Search Fairfax County Inmate Information Through Larger City Police Departments
Government agencies provide public records information differently and, in some cases, you may be able to get more information from a city police department than you could from a state agency (e.g., Department of Corrections) or county agency (Sheriff’s office).
Contacting a city police department can be especially helpful if you know that the individual you are searching for was arrested by that particular police department.
The county has limited city police departments, as the majority of this location is under the jurisdiction of the broader Fairfax County Police Department. Here are the independent police departments in Fairfax County:
Police Station | Address | Phone Number |
Herndon Police Department | 397 Herndon Pkwy. Herndon, Virginia 20170 |

Complete a Background Check With the Fairfax County Police Department
You can request a criminal records check (also known as a background check) through the Fairfax County Police Department Central Records Section. However, before you request an official background check it is important to determine whether you need one.
If you just need to perform an informal search (often referred to as a personal background check) then you will not need to submit a formal request with the Fairfax County Police Department or any other government agency.
A personal background check is conducted by simply looking up available Fairfax County public records online and in person through the tools and resources discussed in this article.
A personal background check has some advantages. First, it is free so you can perform the background check without costing any money. Second, you do not have to receive consent from the person you are performing a background check on. Third, the information you find can be used for any reason as long as it is not illegal (e.g., harassment, stalking, etc.).
A professional background check is often needed by state or federal law. For instance, you will be required to get a professional background check if you wish to request a firearm license or work with certain vulnerable people groups such as children and the elderly.
If a professional background check is needed the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires you to get a person’s explicit consent.16
You are also restricted from using any information uncovered from the background check in a discriminatory manner. If you do so an individual can file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).17
To request a background check from the Fairfax County Police Department you can do so by mail or in person at the below address:
Fairfax County Police Department
Central Records Section
12099 Government Center Pkwy.
Fairfax, Virginia 22035
For in-person requests, you can go any time from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. You will be required to complete their Criminal History Record Information Request Form and provide two forms of identification with one containing your photograph.18 Here are your options for the types of acceptable identification you can provide:
- Original Certificate of Birth
- U.S. Driver’s License
- DMV ID Card
- Passport (U.S. or Foreign)
- U.S. Social Security Card
- U.S. Military Identification
In addition, there is a $10.00 fee required with your request. If you are mailing your request make sure you also follow their additional instructions for requesting your criminal record by mail.19
If you have any further questions you can contact them directly by phone at 703-246-2272.
Note: Mail-in requests can take ten (10) business days to process. If you would like to check on the request of your request you can email the Central Records Division at [email protected].
This criminal record check is limited to adult criminal charges in Fairfax County that were handled by the Fairfax County Police Department. If you need a criminal history background check for the entire state of Virginia you can request one through the Civil & Applicant Records Exchange (CARE) provided by the Virginia State Police.
CARE provides a variety of background checks from statewide criminal history records checks to a national fingerprint-based background check. For more information, you can call them at 804-674-2131 or visit their Background Check FAQ Page.
